Composting is the simplest way to close the loop at home — turning kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich soil that feeds your garden and keeps waste out of the landfill.

Why compost?
Healthy compost improves soil structure, feeds beneficial microbes, and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizer. In Florida’s sandy soils, compost is especially valuable for holding moisture and nutrients.

The basics
Balance “greens” (kitchen scraps, fresh clippings) with “browns” (dry leaves, cardboard), keep it as moist as a wrung-out sponge, and turn it to add air. In a few months you’ll have finished compost.
